![]() ![]() But they were basically identical to LSU quarterback Joe Burrow’s numbers last year. He was a ruthlessly efficient QB who would have put up big numbers in an offense that asked him to throw more. Fromm averaged nine yards an attempt in each of his first two seasons. Another intriguing name would be Minnesota’s Kirk Ciarrocca, but like Harrell, Ciarrocca doesn’t have experience recruiting Georgia’s region.Īs I wrote Saturday, I don’t think quarterback Jake Fromm is the problem. Given the current Georgia staff, any playcaller who takes the duty from assistant James Coley likely would be a coach who works primarily with quarterbacks. Texas needs a new playcaller, and Harrell would fit that role well. Of course, if the native Texan does leave USC, it might be for his home state. Harrell likely would adapt to the kind of line and backs he’d have at a place like Georgia. Harrell ran a pass-heavy offense in his first season at USC, but the Trojans’ best players on that side of the ball were the receivers and quarterback Kedon Slovis. But as Lincoln Riley has proven at Oklahoma, the Air Raid playbook can be adapted to marry a bruising running game with a wide-open passing attack. Harrell, a former Texas Tech quarterback under Mike Leach, runs the Air Raid. Smart also could go farther outside his comfort zone and consider USC’s Graham Harrell. This past season, North Carolina ran the ball 55.2 percent of the time, but quarterback Sam Howell threw for 3,347 yards (8.6 yards per attempt) and 35 touchdowns with seven interceptions. When I visited Chapel Hill this past spring, Mack Brown joked that he wouldn’t have given Longo the time of day if he hadn’t run the ball enough to satisfy an offensive line coach like Luke. North Carolina offensive coordinator Phil Longo worked under Luke at Ole Miss, and in stops at Sam Houston State, Ole Miss and North Carolina, Longo has shown a willingness to adapt to personnel and the desires of his head coach. Georgia’s hiring of former Ole Miss head coach Matt Luke to replace departed offensive line coach Sam Pittman (now the head coach at Arkansas) could open a few more possibilities. In my column on the subject Saturday night, I suggested Tulane offensive coordinator and former West Georgia head coach Will Hall, who operates a run-heavy spread that would fit Georgia’s talent well and who has the recruiting profile to fit what Georgia requires. But he’ll be in Columbia preparing to face the Bulldogs. Bobo actually was willing to adapt on offense and was the glue holding Richt’s regime together. The RUN THE DAMN BALL, BOBO meme that dominated his time as Georgia’s offensive coordinator under Mark Richt was more joke than reality by the end. He tried to hire former Georgia coordinator Mike Bobo - who was fired last week at Colorado State - but South Carolina coach Will Muschamp won the tug-of-war between former Georgia teammates to hire their former teammate Bobo. ![]()
